Apple has sent warnings to users in 110 countries about potential attacks using spyware. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing TechCrunch.
Apple said the notifications are sent to users who, according to the company, may have been targeted by attacks using so-called "mercenary spyware." Such programs allow attackers to gain access to a device and the information stored on it.
How the warning is delivered
The warning may appear directly on the iPhone lock screen. Additionally, Apple sends a notification by email and displays it in the user's account.
In the latest wave, users from 110 countries received warnings. Apple did not disclose the number of recipients or who might be behind the alleged attacks. Since the notification system was launched, the company has warned users in more than 150 countries.
What the notification means
Apple emphasizes that receiving such a notification does not mean the device has been compromised. The company sends warnings if it believes a specific user may have been the target of a targeted attack. Such campaigns are significantly more sophisticated than typical cyberattacks and are usually aimed at a small number of people.
If a warning is received, Apple recommends enabling Lockdown Mode, an enhanced protection mode. It restricts some device functions and reduces the number of potential ways attackers could exploit.
Who is at risk
According to Apple, such attacks may target journalists, politicians, activists, diplomats, and others who become targets due to their work or status. For most users, the likelihood of encountering such an attack remains extremely low.
