The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, September 6. The plane, which had flown from Puerto Rico, overshot the runway upon landing, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air.
Airport operations halted
According to a spokesperson for Miami International Airport, the aircraft overran the airport's diagonal runway and was disabled at the north-west end of the airport. All runways and taxiways are closed, and a ground stop is in effect, preventing all other flights from landing or taking off.
FAA statement
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash in a statement to The Guardian, saying: "21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2 pm local time on Sunday, September 6. The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA will investigate."
No confirmed casualties
There is no official information yet about injuries or fatalities. However, videos posted online show heavy plumes of smoke surrounding an aircraft bearing the Amazon arrow logo on its tail. The plane was reported to be flying for Amazon Prime Air.
Rescue teams on scene
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue has responded to the scene. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on X that responders would "assess the scene after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway." He also warned travelers of significant delays and potential cancellations.
Investigation launched
The FAA has confirmed it will investigate. Amazon and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been contacted for comment. The airport said all runways and taxiways are closed as of 3 pm and a ground stop is in effect.
