The legendary 'RoboCop' is returning to screens. Streaming service Prime Video has officially ordered a series based on the cult franchise. The project will consist of eight episodes. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The plot centers on a massive technology corporation that convinces city authorities to include a powerful robot in the police force. The consciousness of a deceased police officer, considered a hero by residents, is implanted into its body.
Peter Ocko will serve as showrunner and writer. Executive producer will be director James Wan ('Saw', 'The Conjuring', 'Aquaman'). Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, co-writers of the original 1987 film, will also join the project.
'Questions about technology, identity, and who corporations truly serve are even more relevant today than in 1987,' said James Wan.
According to him, the creators want to preserve the spirit of the original 'RoboCop' while making the story modern and relevant for a new audience.
The 'RoboCop' franchise began in 1987 with Paul Verhoeven's film of the same name. Later came two sequels, a 2014 reboot, several TV series, animated series, comics, and video games.
The new series will be part of Amazon MGM Studios' strategy to develop iconic franchises, rights to which the company acquired after purchasing MGM in 2022. Besides 'RoboCop', the company is actively expanding the James Bond universe and working on new projects based on other well-known MGM films.
