A fire erupting from underground in central Almaty frightened city residents. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

According to the Almaty Police Department, on June 25 in the afternoon at the intersection of Gagarin and Kabambay Batyr streets in the Almaly district, witnesses reported a fire in underground utilities.

"Police officers, firefighters, emergency services and energy workers immediately arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officers cordoned off the dangerous area and ensured the safety of citizens, while firefighters began extinguishing the fire," the city police reported.

According to preliminary information from specialists, the incident may have been caused by a short circuit in underground engineering networks.

The fire was quickly contained and extinguished. There were no casualties.

The circumstances of the incident are being established.

Earlier, Kursiv reported that a major fire occurred at the transformer substation of the Western Thermal Complex in the Auezov district of Almaty.
