A unique operation took place at the Research Institute of Cardiology in Almaty. Kazakh surgeons, together with Italian professor Andrea Droghetti, implanted a subcutaneous defibrillator in a patient, designed to help in case of sudden cardiac arrest. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

According to the institute, the cardioverter-defibrillator is implanted in people with complex vascular anatomy, physically active young patients, because they have a higher risk of damage to the intravascular electrode.

In addition, it is placed in patients with diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure with a risk of infectious complications, as well as people who need repeated implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator, especially if the first operation was accompanied by infectious complications.

According to Asylkhan Parimbekov, senior resident of the arrhythmology service, the risks increase many times during repeated implantations. The use of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator with a subcutaneous electrode will minimize all risks.

The operation took place as part of a master class on exchange of experience with the participation of Andrea Droghetti, director of the Department of Thoracic Oncological Surgery at the IRCCS Candiolo Cancer Center in Italy.

According to the Ministry of Health, upon completion of the program, participants will be able to understand how the device is installed and evaluate the impact of the choice of anesthesia method on the implantation process, as well as the workflow when using S-ICD. In addition, they will be able to understand the principles of regional anesthesia, paying special attention to the techniques of serratus anterior plane block and parasternal block.

Earlier, Kursiv reported that 64-year-old Almaty resident Anatoly Kuznetsov had his knee joint replaced by doctors, despite the fact that the man lives with an artificial heart.
