Almaty plans to expand the list of historical and cultural monuments of local significance. In the first stage, 27 sites with historical, architectural and cultural value have been selected. This was reported by the city akimat. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Selected sites
Among them are: the main academic building of Satbayev University, the rectorate of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the National Bank building, the former House of Soviets, the arch of the Central Park, the old building of the Central Department Store, and Republic Square.
Commission's work
A special commission will assess the historical and architectural value of the selected sites, as well as their current condition. Based on the research results, it will be determined which of them are recommended for inclusion in the list of historical and cultural monuments of local significance.
Current situation
Currently, 160 historical and cultural monuments are under state protection in Almaty. Of these, 34 are of republican significance and 126 are of local significance.
To preserve historical heritage, protection zones are being established around the monuments. Restrictions on new construction are being introduced in these areas, which will allow historical buildings to be preserved.
