From July 6, new speed limits for e-scooters came into effect in Almaty. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The changes were announced by the Kazakhstani kick-scooter sharing service JET. Now the speed of e-scooters will depend on where the user is riding.
The list of speed limit modes is as follows:
- 01In pedestrian zones (parks, squares) — 6 km/h.
- 02On sidewalks — 15 km/h.
- 03On bike paths — 20 km/h.
- 04On roadways (shoulder) — 25 km/h.
The company said it has already updated the city map in the app. The scooter will automatically reduce speed when the user enters a restricted zone. According to JET founder Meirambek Abelkasov, the operator supports the city's steps to systematize traffic.
"Pedestrian safety is our top priority. JET promptly updated the city map in the app and set up automatic switching of speed modes. Almaty residents and guests do not need to adjust this manually or be distracted by the speedometer during the trip," said Abelkasov.
JET also reminded that riding e-scooters on sidewalks is still allowed. However, pedestrians always have the right of way, so the company urges users to comply with the new restrictions and be more attentive during trips.
Recall that from August 25, the rules will become stricter. Scooter riders will be removed from sidewalks, and most users generally do not understand where they can ride now.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle wrote in detail about the fines that violators face under the new rules.
