A previously convicted man suspected of a series of apartment burglaries has been detained in Almaty. According to police, he entered stairwells and pulled door handles in search of unlocked apartments. A video of his suspicious behaviour spread on social media. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
The man was detained by officers of the Almaty criminal police together with colleagues from the Almaly district. According to the investigation, he operated mainly in Almaty and Astana: he entered apartments whose owners had left the doors unlocked and stole property.
Police said they had established his involvement in six apartment thefts in Almaty. In one case, a bag with 20,000 tenge disappeared from a hallway; in another, the damage amounted to 40,000 tenge.
The investigation is ongoing. Police are establishing all the circumstances of the incident.
"Even a brief absence from the apartment is no reason to neglect safety. Check your locks and protect your property," police reminded.
