A 54-year-old man riding an electric scooter died in a road accident in Almaty. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The city police department reported the incident. According to preliminary data, he was traveling at a speed of about 90 kilometers per hour. The final moments of the incident were captured by surveillance cameras and dashcams of vehicles passing along the road.
"The man on the electric scooter was riding along the left edge of the road. According to preliminary data, his speed was about 90 kilometers per hour. On the Eastern bypass road, he attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead. At that moment, he lost control," police said.
The video shows the man falling onto the asphalt. The protective helmet also flew off his head from the impact.
Police officers and an ambulance crew arrived at the scene. However, it was not possible to save the man's life. He died at the scene from his injuries.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched into the incident. All circumstances are currently being established.
"This is the first road accident in Almaty that resulted in the death of a person on an electric scooter. Since the beginning of the year, 91 road accidents related to electric scooters have been registered in the city. As a result, 96 people were injured," police reported.
Earlier, it became known that more than 9,000 scooters in Almaty had been placed in an impound lot.
