Surgeons at the Almaty Oncology Center have performed Kazakhstan's first robot-assisted removal of part of the stomach without a large surgical incision. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to the Ministry of Health, the operation was carried out by a team of surgeons from the center using a robotic surgical system.
"During the operation, ICG navigation was used – a technology that allows the surgeon to see the necessary anatomical structures more clearly. In accordance with oncological principles, D2 lymph node dissection was also performed, which involves the removal of regional lymph nodes," the statement said.
For the patient, the robotic technology makes it possible to perform a complex operation through small incisions instead of a large surgical cut. This reduces the invasiveness of the operation and creates conditions for the patient's fastest possible recovery, the ministry said.
The gastric operation was the 15th robot-assisted operation performed by specialists at the Almaty Oncology Center. Previously, robot-assisted operations were performed for diseases of the colon and rectum, prostate, kidney and uterine body.
