On June 28, adverse meteorological conditions (NMU) are forecast only in Almaty, Kazhydromet reported. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
As meteorologists explained, adverse weather conditions occur when calm, light wind, fog, and temperature inversion combine. During such periods, pollutants accumulate in the surface layer of the atmosphere, leading to air quality deterioration.
Specialists warn that during NMU, the risk of negative health effects from polluted air increases, especially for people with chronic diseases. Air pollution levels are also affected by wind speed, precipitation, humidity, and temperature.
Residents of Almaty are advised to reduce time spent outdoors, especially near roads and other pollution sources. Children and pregnant women are recommended to avoid long walks.
People with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, as well as allergy sufferers, are advised to carry necessary medications. Outdoor physical activities should be moved indoors if possible.
Earlier, Kursiv reported that unstable weather will persist over most of Kazakhstan on June 28. According to Kazhydromet forecasters, the country will continue to be influenced by a northwestern cyclone and associated atmospheric fronts, bringing rain, thunderstorms, hail, and squally winds.
During NMU, specialists from the Almaty Ecology Department and Kazhydromet conduct round-the-clock air quality monitoring. Residents are advised to close windows and perform wet cleaning indoors. Air purifiers can be used if necessary.
NMU in Almaty is more common in autumn and winter, but also occurs in summer. The city's geographical location (mountain valley) and heavy traffic contribute to air pollution. According to the Ministry of Ecology, the main sources of air pollution in Almaty are motor vehicles (about 80%) and thermal power plants.
Kazhydromet specialists recommend industrial enterprises reduce emissions during NMU. The Almaty akimat is working to improve air quality by increasing green spaces and developing public transport.
Residents can get air quality information on the Kazhydromet website and mobile apps. When NMU is declared, citizens are advised to wear masks and limit time outdoors.
