Almaty is investigating the death of 14-year-old Maxim Kubarev, who according to his parents fell ill after an intramuscular antibiotic injection at city clinic No. 37. The teenager spent seven days in intensive care but could not be saved. The family demands a review of the medical staff's actions and clarification of the circumstances. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to the parents, Maxim's enlarged lymph nodes were noticed in early August. The family sought help from various medical institutions. The teenager underwent two courses of treatment with antibiotics and other prescribed medications, but the problem persisted.
On October 21, the parents brought their son to an infectious disease specialist at clinic No. 37. According to the teenager's mother, Maria Kubareva, the doctor prescribed an antibiotic and warned that a test must be done before its administration.
According to the woman, after the intramuscular injection of the drug, her son's condition deteriorated sharply.
"He developed a gag reflex. He said he felt bad, that his whole body was shooting with pain. I practically carried him in myself because the reaction was so sharp," said Maria Kubareva.
The mother claims that medical staff began providing assistance, but the teenager did not improve. He developed convulsions, then lost consciousness.
Maxim was taken to the Center for Pediatric Emergency Medical Care and connected to a ventilator. Doctors fought for his life for seven days.
"We continued to believe until the end. I said, first these violent emotions, tears, and then I say, as long as my son's heart is beating, I will not mourn him. I tried to hold on all these days," said the teenager's mother.
The family suggests that Maxim may have developed a severe allergic reaction. The cause of death is to be established during the investigation.
The parents turned to the police and ask to find out what volume of the drug was administered to the teenager, whether the procedure was performed correctly, and how timely emergency assistance was provided.
The family also has separate questions about the medical documentation. According to Maxim's father, Sergei Kubarev, the volume of the drug indicated in the documents differs from what medical staff discussed before the procedure. The parents also claim that in the provided copy of the medication procedure log, some columns remained unfilled.
The family asks to verify this information and assess the actions of the clinic staff and the ambulance crew.
"But first of all, I would like this tragic case of ours to be a lesson for many. And that correct, corrective measures be carried out in the clinics themselves," said Sergei Kubarev.
The Almaty Police Department confirmed that a criminal case has been opened.
"On this fact, the investigative department of the Almaty city police has opened a criminal case. All necessary expert examinations have been appointed. Based on their results, a procedural decision will be made within the framework of the criminal case," said Saltanat Azirbek, official representative of the Almaty Police Department.
The health department expressed condolences to the family and promised to provide additional information after the investigation.
Maxim was in the eighth grade, played sports, and won city painting competitions. According to his relatives, he was interested in anatomy and biology and dreamed of becoming a doctor.
