A device called AG Tag, designed to let tourists call for help even in places without mobile or internet coverage, is being tested in Almaty. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

The device determines a person's exact location via satellite and transmits the coordinates to rescuers using radio communication. In case of danger, pressing the SOS button is enough. The signal appears on the rescue service's electronic map, and the information is updated every two seconds. The device can transmit a signal over a distance of up to 15 kilometers.

The new system is of great importance for mountainous areas, according to the city administration. Every year, more than a thousand search and rescue operations are conducted in the mountains of Almaty. Moreover, many mountain routes lack mobile coverage.

To date, the AG Tag device has successfully passed tests on six routes, including the area around the Big Almaty Lake and popular mountain peaks. It is planned to test it with the participation of tourists and climbers by the end of 2026.
