Work has begun on expanding the Almaty – Kaskelen highway in Karasay district, Almaty region, a road notorious for traffic jams. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The project involves the reconstruction and expansion of a section from the 19th to the 27th kilometer of the Almaty – Bishkek highway of national importance. According to the akimat, more than 70,000 vehicles use this road daily. The current four-lane road has insufficient capacity, leading to frequent traffic jams and reduced travel speeds, negatively affecting transport links between Almaty and suburban settlements.
Under the project, the road will be widened from four to eight lanes. Additionally, two horseshoe-shaped interchanges and nine pedestrian overpasses will be built. Sidewalks and modern lighting systems will be installed along the road. Gas pipelines, water and power lines, and communication infrastructure will also be reconstructed. A new advanced road surface will be laid.
The akimat reported that a positive state expert review for the project was obtained in April 2026. Currently, Almaty is continuing work on building and extending six radial roads and seven main streets that will stretch to the Greater Almaty Ring Road. Development of the metro, LRT, and SkyTrain systems is also underway.
