In Almaty region, due to prolonged heavy rains, the riverbank was eroded on the territory of Aksai Quarry LLP in the village of Zhanaturmys, Karasai district, the press service of the regional akim reported. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to the akimat, water damaged the riverbank, after which a ground collapse occurred in the northwestern part of the quarry.
"Currently, large-scale engineering works are underway to reduce the risk of floods. In particular, the riverbed on a 280-meter section has been deepened by 4 meters and widened to 5 meters. A total of 5,600 cubic meters of soil have been removed, and a 320-meter technological road has been built for the safe operation of special equipment," the press service of the akim of Almaty region reported.
90 people and 29 units of special equipment are involved in emergency rescue and restoration work.
According to the akimat, due to several days of heavy rains, the rivers Turgen, Aksai, Uzynkargaly and Talgar overflowed their banks in the region. A local emergency regime was introduced in some areas.
In Karasai district, due to a sharp rise in the water level in the Aksai River, the adjacent territory and the basement of the Toimart shopping center were flooded. 127 people and seven units of special equipment were involved in eliminating the consequences.
Currently, the water has been completely pumped out of the basement, and the riverbed has been cleared of silt and debris.
