In the Almaty region, 10 inmates of correctional facility No. 14 in the village of Zarechny have been sentenced for extorting money from their cellmates. The men were accused of extorting money from their fellow inmates. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.

According to the regional prosecutor's office, from 2022 to 2024, a group of convicts extorted money from other inmates. The funds were transferred to bank cards and accounts via mobile applications.

In case of refusal, the victims were beaten and humiliated, as well as subjected to psychological pressure and threats.

The investigation of the multi-episode case was conducted by special prosecutors of the Almaty region prosecutor's office. Evidence of the criminal group's illegal activities was presented in court.

"As a result, the court found 10 members of the organized criminal group guilty on all counts and sentenced them to 10 to 15 years in prison," the prosecutor's office reported.

The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.

Earlier, Kursiv reported that in Karaganda, 10 members of an organized criminal group were convicted of extortion. The gang terrorized local residents and extorted money from miners.
