Alexandra Eala of the Philippines stunned world No. 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships on Saturday. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Associated Press.
"I played my best tennis today. Iga is one of the best players in the world, so I had to give everything to beat her," Eala said after the match.
Swiatek committed 15 unforced errors and struggled against Eala's aggressive play. The Filipino hit 28 winners, 10 more than her opponent.
The victory is the biggest of Eala's career. She had never previously beaten a top-10 player.
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan also advanced to the next round, defeating Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-5. Rybakina served 8 aces and won 82% of her first-serve points.
The fourth round of the women's singles will feature Eala, Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff, among others.
