Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik (11) won the quarterfinal match at the ATP-250 tournament in Stuttgart against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (93) – 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (7:3). This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
Until today, the 22-year-old Frenchman had won twice against the Kazakhstani and lost once. However, the opponents had never met on grass. A powerful serve, the trump card of both tennis players, is especially valuable on this surface. Unsurprisingly, there was no hint of a break point in the first set. After taking six games each on their own serves, Alexander and Giovanni decided the set winner on a tiebreak. Luck was on the Kazakhstani's side – 7:5.
The second set followed a similar scenario. Again, the tiebreak went to our tennis player – 7:3. After 1 hour and 18 minutes, the opponents shook hands. Interestingly, the Frenchman outscored the Kazakhstani in aces – 19:11, but lost in total points won – 71:82.
Bublik's opponent in the semifinals will be determined later. In all likelihood, it will be the defending Stuttgart champion Taylor Fritz (9). In last year's final, the American defeated the future Roland Garros 2026 champion Alexander Zverev (3) from Germany – 6:3, 7:6 (7:0).
In the first round of the current tournament, the American, partner of Elena Rybakina in the victorious 2026 Eisenhower Cup, barely got past Spaniard Martin Landaluce (58) – 6:7 (4:7), 7:5, 7:6 (7:3). Whether Fritz will play Bublik will be decided by Taylor's quarterfinal match against Italian Mattia Bellucci (78).
This evening, Bublik will also play in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.
The Stuttgart Open, now called the Boss Open, has been held since 1916. Its winners include Henri Leconte, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi, Goran Ivanisevic, Gustavo Kuerten, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and other stars.
The prize fund of the WTA-250 tournament in Stuttgart is €750,320.
The series of grass-court tournaments precedes the third Grand Slam tournament of the calendar year. Wimbledon 2026 will take place from June 29 to July 12.
