Kazakhstan's Interior Ministry has warned citizens to beware of scammers posing as utility workers. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
According to police, recently fraudsters have been calling residents, pretending to be heating service specialists. Their goal is to gain access to personal data or bank accounts.
Scammers typically use the following excuses: - you need to register a heat meter; - you submitted an application; - your documents need to be updated; - you have a debt or we are processing a discount.
Then they ask for the SMS code sent to your phone. Police warn that this code must not be shared with anyone. Using the SMS code, scammers can access banking apps, government service accounts, and commit illegal actions in your name.
Law enforcement advises: - verify the identity of the caller; - never share SMS codes, bank card details, CVV codes, or personal information; - if in doubt, end the conversation and contact the organization via its official number; - do not download apps or follow links at the instruction of strangers.
Police remind that utility workers never ask for SMS codes over the phone.
