On June 30, 2026, residents of several regions in Kazakhstan witnessed a rare phenomenon — the Moon turned crimson. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The unusual coloration of the Moon is caused by high levels of dust and moisture in the atmosphere. According to experts, this phenomenon is known as a "Blood Moon" and typically occurs during a total lunar eclipse. However, this time there was no eclipse; the Moon turned crimson solely due to atmospheric conditions.
Photographs show the Moon with a bright red hue. The phenomenon was particularly visible in Almaty, Nur-Sultan, and Shymkent. Residents actively shared images on social media.
Astronomers explain that the red color of the Moon results from sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere. Short-wavelength blue light scatters, leaving only long-wavelength red light to reach the Moon. This effect is usually seen at sunrise or sunset.
Kazakhstanis enjoyed the unusual sight and took photos. Some residents called it a "miracle." However, experts note that this is a natural process and poses no danger.
The Moon remained crimson for several hours. The next such phenomenon is expected in 2027.
