A court has sentenced the former deputy head of the Almaty police department in connection with a road accident on Al-Farabi Avenue, the city court reports. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The charge was inaction in service that led to grave consequences.
"He knew that the Zeekr driver had been drinking and saw that he was driving dangerously, but did not try to prevent the race," the court said.
The prosecutor asked the court to sentence the defendant to seven years in prison, while his lawyer asked for his acquittal.
The court imposed a sentence of 3.6 years in prison with a lifetime ban on holding positions in the civil service, the courts, and local self-government bodies.
Recall that on March 21, a road accident occurred at the intersection of Al-Farabi Avenue and Mendikulov Street, killing three people.
The driver of a Zeekr car, speeding in the center of the city, collided with a Mercedes traveling in the oncoming lane. As a result of the accident, the 29-year-old driver of the Mercedes and two passengers, aged 20 and 23, died at the scene.
The driver of the Zeekr was taken to hospital with various injuries.
Following this incident, which caused public outcry, an inspection was carried out at the Almaty police department, and several executives were dismissed.
