In the Zhetysu region, a 19-year-old single mother and her mother have been taken into custody. They are charged with extortion on an especially large scale. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.

Relatives of the suspects posted a video on social media asking for help. According to them, the 19-year-old woman has an 8-month-old baby. "Because the mother is in custody, the baby is not getting enough nourishment. My mother is carrying the baby, and she herself is in poor health. We are standing in front of the police station, no one lets us in. We have been here since two in the morning, we are calling an ambulance," the relatives said.

The relatives said that the girl went to meet the father of the child and asked him for 25 million tenge as help. But instead of money, the girl was detained by police.

The regional police department commented on the incident. "The police are conducting a pre-trial investigation into the fact of extortion on an especially large scale, which is a serious crime. Two female suspects were caught red-handed while receiving money in the amount of 25 million tenge, demanded for not bringing to criminal responsibility," the police said. The issue of sanctioning a preventive measure against them will be considered in court.

According to the regional commissioner for children's rights of the Zhetysu region, Yeginbayev, the infant of the detained woman has been placed under the care of the grandmother. "In accordance with the requirements of the current legislation, a proposal was made on the need to consider legal mechanisms regarding the possibility of the infant and mother staying together. At the same time, the decisions taken should be based primarily on the principles of the child's interests and safety," he said.
