Official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Shyngys Alekeshev explained the procedure for mandatory medical examinations for drivers over 65 years old. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Kursiv Media.
According to Alekeshev, the mandatory medical examination for drivers over 65 has been in effect since 2014. Starting August 25 of this year, only one change comes into force: if a driver fails to undergo the mandatory medical examination in a timely manner, their driver's license may be temporarily suspended automatically.
Thus, only the procedure for suspending the driver's license is new. The medical examination itself remains a long-standing requirement.
He also noted that if a driver has just turned 65, they are not required to undergo a medical examination immediately. The first mandatory medical examination must be completed by age 67. After that, the medical certificate is valid for two years. The next examination must be completed at age 69, then at 71, and then every two years thereafter.
"Therefore, those who have just turned 65 do not need to create a stir and stand in queues. You can calmly undergo the medical examination closer to age 67," said the representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to Alekeshev, a driver can undergo the medical examination wherever is convenient: it can be a private clinic, a state polyclinic, at the place of residence, or in another city. The main thing is that the medical organization has the competence to conduct such an examination.
"What happens if you don't undergo the medical examination on time? Your rights may be suspended, but this is not deprivation of rights. As soon as you undergo the medical examination, the validity of your driver's license will be automatically restored. I also want to reassure you: at first, police officers will explain the new requirements and warn the driver, so if a person did not know or forgot to undergo the medical examination, they will first be given the opportunity to do it calmly. I officially declare: no separate fine for not undergoing a medical examination is provided for by law," assured the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
If the medical examination has been completed, but the information has not yet appeared in the database, it is enough to show the police officer a paper certificate.
Earlier, Kursiv wrote that from August 25, 2026, amendments to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Road Traffic" come into force. Now drivers over 65 will undergo medical examinations every two years.
