Today Jamaica celebrates its national holiday – Independence Day. The holiday was established in honor of the anniversary of gaining independence from Great Britain in 1962. On this day, nationwide festivities, celebrations, and fireworks are held in the country.
Jamaica's modern history began on May 5, 1498, when Christopher Columbus, during his second voyage, set foot on its shores. At that time, over one hundred thousand Arawak Indians lived on Jamaica (the aborigines called it "Xamayca"). Columbus renamed Jamaica to Santiago.
