Traffic Light Day

All city dwellers are accustomed to traffic lights as an important object on roads and intersections, but few know that the world celebrates Traffic Light Day. August 5, 1914 is considered the official birthday of the device that regulates traffic.

On this day, the first traffic light was installed on the streets of Cleveland. It had two lamps - red and green - which alternated, and when switching, a long signal was emitted that confused some residents.

In the 1920s, three-color traffic lights were installed in New York and Detroit, and they quickly spread not only to American cities but also worldwide. In the USSR, the first traffic light was installed in Leningrad in early 1930, and in December of the same year, Muscovites also began to use this device regularly.

Victory Day in Croatia

Croatia celebrates Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day. It is dedicated to the victory in the war for independence, which lasted from 1991 to 1995. After the collapse of Yugoslavia, the self-proclaimed state of Serbs, the Republic of Serbian Krajina (RSK), was created in Croatia. This led to a war between Croats and Krajina Serbs.

In August 1995, the Croatian army and the fifth corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina jointly conducted the military operation "Storm". During the operation, Croatian troops took the city of Knin, the capital of the RSK. As a result, the RSK was dissolved and the territorial integrity of Croatia was restored.

The center of the annual celebrations dedicated to the holiday is not Zagreb (the capital of Croatia), but the city of Knin. Gradually, during the holiday, all those who died in the civil war of the 90s began to be remembered. In this regard, in 2008, by decision of the Sabor (Croatian Parliament), the name of the holiday was expanded. Now it is called Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Defenders Day.
