The United States of America celebrates a national holiday – Independence Day. Americans call this holiday "Fourth of July". On July 4, 1776, the US Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. The document was signed by Congress President John Hancock and Secretary Charles Thomson.

Also today is the day of remembrance of the genocide of Jews during World War II. On July 4, 1941, fascist German troops locked thousands of Jews in eight synagogues in the Latvian capital Riga and burned them alive. This day went down in history as "Crystal Night".
