Today is International Asteroid Day. On this day in 1908, the Earth collided with the Tunguska meteorite, leading to the largest asteroid disaster in human history. In 2016, the UN General Assembly designated June 30 as International Asteroid Day. The day aims to raise awareness about the risk of asteroid impacts and the measures to be taken in such an event. The initiative was proposed by filmmaker Grig Richters, B612 Foundation executive director Danica Remy, NASA astronaut Russell Schweickart, and astrophysicist and Queen guitarist Brian May.
National Holiday in the USA
In the United States, today is National Mai Tai Day. The drink was created by Victor Bergeron, owner of the "Polynesian-style" restaurant chain in California. In the 1940s, Bergeron claimed the cocktail, but Don Beach also contested the right. According to Beach, he invented the cocktail in Hollywood in the 1930s.
