Today, Brazil celebrates Army Day. This day was established in honor of the commander-in-chief, Marshal Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, born on August 25, 1803. He served his country for over 60 years and contributed to the strengthening of the Brazilian state. In 1961, he was given the title of patron of the Brazilian Army, and in 1869, for his bravery in the Paraguayan War, he received the title of Duke of Caxias. In 1923, Army Day was introduced in Brazil on his birthday. Two cities, Duque de Caxias and Caxias do Sul, are named in his honor.

Also today, the world celebrates International Bat Night. The purpose of the holiday is to draw public attention to bat conservation and dispel myths about these nocturnal animals.
