The United States celebrates National Waffle Day today. The history of the holiday dates back to August 24, 1869, when American Cornelius Swarthout patented a pan that allowed making the sweet treat. Thus, waffles were created. Forty-two years later, an electric version came into use. American waffles are fried on a special pan on both sides, resembling honeycombs. Once ready, waffles can be topped with various syrups.

Ukraine celebrates Independence Day today. This day is considered the founding day of the modern Ukrainian state.

Kyrgyzstan observes Internal Troops Day, Georgia celebrates Constitution Day. In Estonia, Pärtel Day marks the beginning of autumn, a tradition dating back to the 18th century.

Today is the birthday of potato chips. In 1853, in Saratoga Springs, USA, restaurateur and chef George Crum first prepared potato chips. After seeing a restaurant guest complain about undercooked fried potatoes, Crum sliced potatoes very thinly and invented a new frying method.
