The holiday is celebrated by caravan leaders, people in transport columns and sea caravans, those involved in long-distance travel, merchant ship crews and export vessel crews.

The professional holiday was established in 1995 by the International Association for the Rationalization of Cargo Transport Operations. The date of September 24 was chosen because it is the birthday of the famous British sailor and navigator William Adams, who lived in the 16th-17th centuries.

He is considered the first Briton to reach the shores of Japan. After his sea voyage of 1597-1600, Adams lived in the Land of the Rising Sun for 20 years and worked hard to develop Japan's trade relations with England and Holland.
