Today, August 23, several important holidays and memorial days are observed around the world. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade
On the initiative of UNESCO, August 23 was designated as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This date was established in connection with the slave uprising that took place in Santo Domingo at the end of the 18th century. Since then, the slave trade began to be eradicated worldwide.
Although humanity long ago abolished slavery and the slave trade, this concept, unfortunately, remains one of the social and humanitarian problems today. According to specialized and non-governmental organizations, millions of people become victims of slavery (labor slavery, sex slavery, and others) every year. Especially the violation of the rights of women and children is increasing.
In conflict regions, areas under the influence of radical groups, or zones of military operations, this problem is particularly dangerous – human trafficking flourishes there. In addition, low-income families and neglected people are also at risk.
European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism
Today, Europe also marks the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism. This day is observed on August 23 – the day the non-aggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union was signed. It was established by the European Parliament on April 2, 2009.
The proposal to establish the memorial day was mentioned in the "Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism," signed on June 3, 2008, by Vaclav Havel and members of the European Parliament. On September 23, 2008, 409 members of the European Parliament signed a declaration supporting the establishment of the memorial day.
The declaration speaks of "massive repression, murder, and enslavement committed on the basis of aggressive acts of Stalinism and Nazism, which constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity." On April 2, 2009, the European Parliament approved the law on the memorial day by vote. In July 2009, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly at its meeting in Vilnius unanimously supported the resolution "Uniting a Divided Europe," condemning the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century – Nazism and Stalinism.
