June 23 is celebrated worldwide as International Olympic Day. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The first idea of creating a holiday dedicated to the Olympic movement was proposed in 1947 at the 41st session of the International Olympic Committee in Stockholm, and a year later, at the 42nd IOC session in St. Moritz, the project was officially approved. The choice of date was influenced by a historical event. In 1894, an international congress on physical education was held in Paris. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was enthusiastic about reviving the Olympic movement, gave a report on June 23, announcing the development of the organizational foundations of the Olympic Games.
In Kazakhstan, today is celebrated as Kazakhstan Police Day. In 1992, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan adopted the law "On Internal Affairs Bodies of Kazakhstan." In 2007, by decree of the head of state, June 23 was officially established as Police Day. On this day, employees of internal affairs bodies are usually awarded orders of various degrees. The head of state congratulates the personnel of the internal affairs bodies.
Today is also Balalaika Day. The president of the Russian Folk Musicians Club, D. Belinsky, proposed creating such a holiday to unite all performers and lovers of folk songs and national instruments. Balalaika Day is celebrated on June 23, and this date was not chosen by chance — the instrument was first mentioned in an official document on June 23, 1688. The holiday has been celebrated since 2008, with concerts, musical evenings, and meetings with performers held not only in Russia but also in the USA, South Africa, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Australia, and other countries. The balalaika is a traditional Russian musical instrument. It was modeled after the dombra, improved, and began to be used as a concert, orchestral, and ensemble instrument.
