International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Violence Based on Religion
Today is the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. This holiday was established by the UN General Assembly in May 2019.
Looking back at history, countless people have suffered violence based on religion or belief: the persecution of Christians in ancient Rome, the massacre of Muslims by Christian knights during the Crusades, conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, and many others.
By establishing this day, the UN General Assembly calls on all state and non-governmental organizations, and representatives of all religious confessions, to remember the victims and those affected by violence based on religion or belief.
Russia's Flag Day
Russia celebrates Flag Day today. The holiday was first celebrated on August 22, 1994. The Russian President signed a decree reintroducing the historical, traditional tricolor flag.
The Russian state flag consists of white, blue, and red colors. White symbolizes purity, blue – loyalty or the image of the Holy Mother of God, and red – the generosity of the Russian people.
The tricolor flag was first raised on the ship "Oryol" in 1667 during the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Later, under Peter I, a double-headed eagle began to be depicted in the center of the flag. From 1858 to 1883, the colors of the Russian flag were completely changed: white, yellow, and black.
Founding Day of the Komi Republic
Today is also the founding day of the Komi Republic. On this official holiday and day off, ceremonial meetings and festive concerts are held, and the people widely celebrate the founding of the Komi Republic. On August 22, 1921, Komi was first established as an autonomous oblast, and later in 1936 it gained the status of an autonomous republic within the RSFSR.
According to census data, five years after the republic's founding, over 90 percent of the population were Komi.
