International Holidays
Today is International Water Monitoring Day. The holiday has been celebrated since 2003. It was established as an environmental holiday on the initiative of America's Clean Water Fund. Today it has become an informational, special program aimed at increasing public knowledge about keeping the environment clean and about water resource issues.
On September 18, many countries from Australia to the United States celebrate Cheeseburger Day. According to legend, in the 1920s, a young cook named Lionel Sternberger accidentally burned a hamburger for the first time at one of the diners in Pasadena (California). However, instead of throwing the badly burned meat into the trash, he covered it with cheese. This hamburger was very popular with guests. Thus the hamburger with cheese and meat appeared, eventually gaining the name cheeseburger.
In addition, today is World Equal Pay Day. This commemorative day was established by the United Nations (UN) to eliminate the pay gap between men and women and to support the principle of equal pay for equal work.
Also today is International E-Book Day. This commemorative day was first established in 2014 on the initiative of the large "OverDrive" company, which is engaged in the distribution of digital literature. The main goal of the holiday is to promote the convenience and efficiency of reading books through electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, readers) and to support digital reading culture.
