In Almaty, a verdict has been reached in a high-profile murder case after 17 years. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
The convicted man had been hiding outside Kazakhstan for many years using false personal data.
Crime committed in 2008
The crime was committed on the night of May 19, 2008. According to the court, the convict and his accomplice, after a conflict with a representative of the criminal underworld, ambushed the victim near a house on Furmanov Street. The man died at the scene from his injuries, the Prosecutor General's Office said.
After the murder, the convict was placed on the international wanted list. His accomplice was detained in the summer of 2008 following an armed incident in a recreation area in Kapshagay. During the incident, a police officer was killed and four others were seriously injured. In 2009, the accomplice was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
Known by the nickname "King Kong"
The search for the convict continued. He was known in criminal circles by the nickname "King Kong" and was part of the circle of a well-known Kyrgyz criminal authority. Kyrgyz law enforcement also sought him in connection with the murder of a car wash owner in Bishkek in 2007. For many years, he hid in European countries using altered personal data, the report said.
The convict was detained in August 2025 while crossing the Lithuanian border, and in November, at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office, he was extradited from Lithuania to Kazakhstan. He was found guilty of aiding murder committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
