Several important international days are observed around the world on October 15. This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing Sputnik Kazakhstan.
Global Handwashing Day
Today is Global Handwashing Day. Whether or not to wash hands is a personal matter for each individual, depending on their hygiene and upbringing. However, as experts from the UN and the World Health Organization point out, if the problem of not washing hands is considered on a global scale, the consequences are very severe.
Through dirt on hands, pathogens of dangerous diseases such as cholera, viral pneumonia, hepatitis, influenza and ARVI enter the human body. In Asia and Africa, the majority of children die from eating food with unwashed hands. According to UNICEF, five thousand children die from diarrhea every day. The reason is that children do not wash their hands at all before eating and after visiting the toilet.
White Cane Day
October 15 is also known as White Cane Day. This date reminds people that persons with disabilities also live in society. The white cane has its own history. In 1921, a young photographer from Bristol lost his sight after an accident. However, the man did not lose hope and decided to learn to move around the city independently with the help of a cane. But soon he realized that people on the street did not pay attention to his black cane. After that, he asked to paint his "assistant" white. This idea of the photographer helped not only himself but also people with disabilities across Europe and America.
In addition, today marks the International Day of Rural Women.
