A video recorded by nurse Umer Chane at Denbecha Primary Hospital in Ethiopia's Amhara region shows 12-year-old Markos Abaye cradling a sick chicken, saying "She is wheezing." This was reported by Qazaqyia.kz citing BBC News.

Growing up in rural Ethiopia, Markos developed a deep affection for animals. When his chicken fell ill and home treatments failed, he rushed the bird to the local hospital. The nurse responded: "Listen, there are doctors who treat animals. You have to take her there. This is a hospital for humans."

Markos then took the chicken to a vet, where it was treated. His uncle and guardian, Kelemework Amogne, said Markos was so distressed he stopped studying and eating. Markos watches the chicken carefully, studies her footprints, and builds small bridges over holes.

Markos went to live with his uncle in August 2023 when conflict erupted in Amhara. The chicken was a parting gift from his grandparents. Nurse Umer said: "I could see the kindness in his face. He hugged the chicken tightly, worried about her condition."

After the story drew national attention, a local poultry company announced it would donate 100 chickens to Markos and provide training in poultry farming.
