The Battle of Poltava was the largest battle of the Great Northern War between the Russian army under Peter I and the Swedish troops under Charles XII. The battle took place on the morning of June 27 (July 8), 1709, near the city of Poltava. As a result of the crushing defeat of the Swedish army, the Great Northern War was decided in Russia's favor, and Sweden's dominance in Europe was eliminated.

Birthday of the Football Whistle

Also today is the birthday of the football whistle. Referees appeared on the football field only in 1873. At that time, the referee was not allowed to intervene in the game at his own discretion. The main task of the referee was to keep time, record the match, appoint players, and arbitrate disputes between teams. Until 1878, referees did not have a special whistle; they controlled the game by voice or gave signals, and also rang a bell to attract attention or make decisions. At that time, the right to referee was given not to professionals but to football enthusiasts. On July 10, 1878, at a match in London, a policeman was the referee; during the game, a fight broke out, and the policeman, without hesitation, used his whistle. The frightened players immediately stopped the fight. Since then, football referees have used a whistle.
